Picking A Host For A Business Website

August 8, 2009 Internet 2 Comments

It’s very easy for people to start a small online business as a variety of different plans are available from hosting companies at affordable prices of which often don’t require any prior knowledge of websites, servers or hosting.

Choosing your service provider is like choosing a business partner. Just because a company offers a budget web hosting service, doesn’t mean they are the best option for you as you may only get what you pay for, additionally some of the larger companies can be seriously overpriced with lots of hidden charges.

The internet is becoming more and more popular every day and now many non-technical people have a high desire to utilize it for both business and pleasure, and one of the most crucial decisions that most online businesses have to make is to choose the best web hosting service for their needs.

Before approaching a host, you must estimate the bandwidth (traffic) and space (storage) requirements which you may need. If you’re not sure one of the best places to get advice is from the online community via one of the many forums which are out there.

You should also choose a suitable domain name as this is one of the first things a webhost will need before they can set up your account.
There is a bit of an art to choosing one: Non-geographical TLD (Top Level Domains) like ‘.com‘ ‘.org‘ ‘.net‘ or ‘.biz‘, are often the first thing to go for, although these are also the most popular and often the name you want may not available. The other option is geographical based names like names ending in .uk for example: ‘.co.uk‘ ‘.org.uk’ ‘.ltd.uk’ ‘.plc.uk’.

Where possible it is advisable for the domain name to:
1) Reflect your business or service name.
2) Not include a hyphen (eg. you-domain.com)
3) If a geographical name to be relevant to your country for the sake of SEO (Search Engine Optimization: Google, Bing, etc)

Searching for a particular web hosting service provider to host your site can be intimidating, but web hosting directories and again, community forums, are some of the finest places to look for a good deal.

With the recession currently in full swing, huge numbers of new small businesses are forming in hopes of making a positive profit online. I’ve had the opportunity many times to give suggestions to e-commerce website owners, whose numbers are increasing rapidly.

The number of consumers who are opting to purchase their products and services online are also increasing, therefore the smart business man or woman just can’t sit idle waiting for the market to become saturated with a multitude of online businesses while there is money to be made here and now.
